Cork is a lovely city situated in the South of Ireland. It has a population of 160,000 and is the largest city in Munster. It is situated at the River Lee and the city is a large seaport with many docks and quays. It is located on an island and there are many hills and bridges, many beautiful Georgian houses an many walkways. Also, the European walking route E8, which is a trail across the continent, starts in Cork. This trail leads to the city of Istanbul. Cork has an amazing natural site, but it also has a rich cultural heritage which became really recognized in the year 2005 when it was selected as the European Capital of Culture.
. In Cork one can find different festivals of folk dance, choral music, jazz and film, which are annually organized. The most famous building of the city is the church tower of Shandon, located in the North side. There are also two beautiful cathedrals, the Church of Ireland St Finbarre’s Cathedral and the Roman Catholic St Mary’s Cathedral. Another site that you should not forget to visit is the English Market, which has existed for centuries on end. Cork has a great nightlife too. There are many restaurants, pubs and clubs to be found.
The inhabitants of Cork are friendly, very talkative and humorous. On the whole there is a very relaxed atmosphere in the city. The West of Cork has become very popular in recent years, also internationally. Famous people like the English actor Jeremy Irons and Neil Jordan, the director of films like The Crying Game and The End of the Affair, and Michael Collins, have settled here, for example.
