Portsmouth is located in the south east of England. With a population of almost 200.000 (more than 440.000 if you include the suburbs) it’s a great city to stay. It has been an important naval port for centuries. Nowadays the main port has the function of a dockyard and base for the Royal Navy. During the second World War the city and its port had been used as headquarters for the army. It was also the place of departure for most of the ships on D-Day and other military operations. As it’s situated on the coast, you have the opportunity to participate in many water sports. Besides, in the summer the climate is very nice it’s not too hot and not too cold.

If you would like to be entertained, you have a few opportunities. There are three music venues you can visit. Many bands have been playing there so it’s a must to go there if you like concerts. During the weekend you sometimes can watch football. Their football club Portsmouth F.C. plays in the English premier league.

The historic dockyard is now open to visitors. There are many things to see, among them the Royal Naval and D-Day museum with the complete story of the operations and original movies. There are also a few ships you can enter to get an impression of how life must have been on sea.

Other interesting things to see are the in 2005 finished Spinnake tower and Charles’ dickens birthplace. If you are not a culture loving person you can still enjoy your stay. There are good shopping facilities. Gunwharf quays, for example, is a large shopping centre located near the historic dockyard. It has over 90 designer outlets many bars and restaurants and even a cinema. You will find everything you need in a short distance from the city centre. Another shopping centre is the Cascades Shopping Centre. This shopping centre is located in the historic centre of Portsmouth. But in the city centre are more shops. Take a walk and you’ll see that Portsmouth has everything to offer.
