Salisbury is a city in Wilshire, in England. The city is near the famous Stonehenge and it is located in a valley and the landscapes of its area are very beautiful with rivers and water meadows. Salisbury is still a city very natural and old, without an excess of motorways and noise.
Salisbury has also a rich history and many of its buildings, mainly towers, are said to be haunted. One of those monuments with ghosts is the Odeon cinema which is the oldest cinema in England.
The name of the city comes from the Latin Sorviodunum. There are many beautiful landscapes in Salisbury and all the area is worth being visited.
The city is well known because it was an important pole for music in the 18th century. Arts are famous in Salisbury and there are many galleries to be visited and the annual International Arts Festival in May and July provides the visitor many representations of theatre, sculpture, dance, art exhibitions… The most important monument here is the medieval cathedral which is a beautiful and historic building, an international symbol of Christianity and a world class heritage attraction. It is a centre of pilgrimage for hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
There are many restaurants and bars in Salisbury where you can experiment the English food. Direct trains from Salisbury take only 90 minutes to the heart of London, which makes it attractive for those who want to stay close to the capital, its also only 90 minutes by taxi from Heathrow Airport and 30 minutes from Southampton Airport. It is possible to practice many sports in Salisbury, there are many centres, and you can play golf, tennis, bowling and horse riding.
Most of our students use Heathrow airport which is 90 minutes journey from Salisbury. However, sometimes students using connecting flights from Europe may be able to use Southampton airport which is just 30 minutes away from Salisbury. There are three direct buses each day from Heathrow to Salisbury run by National Express. See www.nationalexpress.com for coach times. Each hour there is a coach service from each airport terminal to Woking railway station which links with a direct hourly train service to Salisbury. There is a regular train service from Gatwick airport to Clapham Junction. Here passengers can take the direct train to Salisbury.
